The season two finale of popular show “The Last of Us” drew less viewers than its premiere or the first season’s final episode. On HBO and Max, 3.7 million people watched on its first night, which is lower than the 5.3 million who watched in April and the 8.2 million who ended the first season last year.
The decline might be due to the Memorial Day weekend debut, when viewership tends to be lower. However, HBO notes that its second season has averaged 37 million worldwide views across all platforms. The show’s first season drew 32 million in just the US.
Other shows also reported lower-than-expected viewership. Fox Sports’ Indianapolis 500 broadcast drew 7.05 million viewers, up 40% from last year and a new record since 2008. Meanwhile, “The Chi” premiered to 2 million cross-platform viewers, its highest yet, and the American Music Awards on CBS saw an 8% increase in viewership compared to the previous year.
