A barrage of drones and missiles launched by Russia targeted residential buildings and energy infrastructure in Ukraine, killing at least 12 people and injuring many more.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched over 120 drones and more than 40 missiles on Saturday, with 56 drones shot down and 61 redirected. However, the exact number of missiles intercepted is unclear.
The attacks damaged about 18 buildings, including a kindergarten, in the central city of Poltava, killing eight people and injuring 17. In another city, Kharkiv, a woman was killed and four people were wounded in a drone attack.
Regional officials reported three police officers killed while patrolling during the attacks. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, saying Russia’s use of terror tactics highlights the need for more support to defend against Russian aggression.
Russia claims its forces targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure but has shot down 108 Ukrainian drones in the last 24 hours. The conflict has shown no signs of de-escalation, despite US President Donald Trump’s promise to enact a ceasefire and talks between the two leaders have stalled over details.
