The flu is causing widespread concern in Minnesota, particularly in the Twin Cities region. According to data released by the Minnesota Department of Health, 537 people were admitted to hospitals between December 29 and January 4, marking the highest weekly total in four years.
Statewide, 877 people were hospitalized due to influenza in the week ending January 4, surpassing last year’s peak of nearly 300 weekly hospitalizations. The actual number of flu hospitalizations may exceed 900, based on revised data.
In addition to flu, COVID-19 and RSV hospitalization numbers have increased, but remain lower than reported in early January 2024.
There is also a concerning increase in norovirus cases across the state. As the situation continues to unfold, monitoring wastewater for COVID-19 presence has shown levels rising since late November, with recent data showing a slight decrease, offering some hope for potential drops in hospitalizations.
