Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sparked a heated debate over intellectual property, patents, and copyright with a short post declaring, “delete all IP law.” X’s current owner Elon Musk quickly responded in agreement. The comments come as AI companies face numerous lawsuits alleging they’ve violated copyright to train their models.
Dorsey’s stance suggests that automated IP fines for AI infringement may become a substitute for punishing creators who don’t comply with existing laws. However, others have criticized this approach, saying it would harm those who already struggle under existing regulations. Ed Newton-Rex described the debate as “tech execs declaring all-out war on creators who don’t want their life’s work pillaged for profit.”
Dorsey later elaborated that current IP law takes too much from creators and only benefits gatekeepers. He claimed that creativity is what currently separates human creations from AI creations, but others argue that IP law provides a necessary framework to protect creators’ rights.
Musk has previously expressed similar views, stating that patents are for the weak. His stance on IP law aligns with his past comments on patent enforcement and his openness to open-source approaches to social media, such as Bluesky. However, it remains unclear whether Musk’s views on IP law will translate into actual policy changes.
