A female elephant has killed two British and New Zealand female tourists while on a walking safari in Zambia’s South Luangwa national park. The victims, 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor from the UK and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor from New Zealand, were attacked by an enraged mother trying to protect her calf.
Police report that safari guides who accompanied the group attempted to stop the attack with gunfire, but failed to prevent the elephant’s deadly charge. Both women died at the scene. This incident is not the first of its kind in Zambia; last year, two American female tourists were killed by elephants while on a separate safari vehicle.
Zambia’s national parks are home to large and aggressive elephant populations. Female elephants are particularly protective of their young and can become violent if they perceive threats.
