Two veteran Iranian Supreme Court judges, Mohammad Moghiseh and Judge Ali Razini, were shot dead inside the Tehran court where they worked, according to state-affiliated media reports. The judiciary described the attack as a “planned assassination” carried out by an assailant with no pending cases.
Judge Moghiseh had faced sanctions from the US and EU for handling high-profile cases involving protesters, artists, and activists. He was known for presiding over trials that disregarded evidence and unsubstantiated charges.
In one notable case, Moghiseh sentenced eight Iranian Facebook users to 127 years in prison for anti-regime publicity. Another prominent case saw him sentence human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh to 33 years in prison and 148 lashes.
Judge Razini had previously survived an assassination attempt in 1999 when a bomb was attached to his vehicle. He is also implicated in the “Death Commission” – a committee responsible for thousands of executions during Iran’s 1988 crackdown on political prisoners, alongside former president Ebrahim Raisi.
