Two Major Discount Chains to Close All Stores in South Florida

Big Lots and Party City, two major discount chains, announced their plans to shut down all of their stores nationwide. Big Lots, a discount home good retailer founded in Ohio in 1967, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and began “going out of business” sales over the weekend. The chain will close its remaining stores by March.

Party City, a New Jersey-based chain that sold costumes, balloons, and decorations, also announced it was shutting down after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in two years. The company plans to put its assets up for bidding and sell off its inventory as it shutsters about 750 stores nationwide.

The final day of Big Lots’ stores will be March, while Party City’s stores are expected to close on February 28. Customers are encouraged to shop now for remaining inventory at both chains, with Big Lots offering a 25% discount on most goods and Party City marking down Christmas decor by 50%.
