Two Paths to Happiness: Hedonic vs Heroic

As we navigate our pursuit of happiness, it’s essential to recognize that there are two distinct formulas at play. The modern formula, often referred to as hedonic happiness, focuses on instant gratification and short-term pleasure. On the other hand, the classic formula, or heroic happiness, emphasizes a lifetime process of cultivating virtues such as health, friendship, knowledge, and moral development.

While the pursuit of happiness may be universal, the method by which we pursue it makes a significant difference in our overall well-being. Hedonic happiness is often associated with mental health consequences, such as declining mental health metrics, worsening suicide rates, and “deaths of despair.” In contrast, heroic happiness is linked to positive mental health benefits.

The shift from heroic to hedonic happiness occurred gradually over the mid-20th century. The introduction of television, ultra-processed food, online shopping, same-day delivery, computers, and smartphones all contributed to a cultural shift away from long-term well-being. Instead, we’ve become more isolated, focused on superficial aspects, and reliant on short-term pleasures.

To achieve true happiness, it’s essential to recognize the importance of heroic happiness. By embracing this formula, we can focus on building meaningful relationships, cultivating personal growth, and prioritizing long-term well-being. As Stephen Covey once said, “If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.” Let’s make a conscious effort to shift our pursuit of happiness towards heroic happiness and prioritize our overall well-being.
