Typhoon Wipha made landfall in southern China on Sunday, causing widespread destruction and flight disruptions in Hong Kong and nearby airports in China. The storm toppled trees, grounded at least 400 flights, and affected around 80,000 passengers.
The typhoon strengthened overnight and brought strong winds of up to 140 kph, causing damage to vehicles and branches on streets. Over 450 reports of fallen trees were received by the Hong Kong government, with 26 people seeking medical treatment.
Flights at several airports in China and Macau were canceled or postponed, while high-speed train services were suspended. The storm is expected to make landfall on China’s coast late Sunday before moving to Vietnam later this week.
The Philippines was also affected by Typhoon Wipha, leaving one villager dead and over 370,000 people impacted by stormy weather. South Korea faced a five-day torrential rain period that resulted in 14 deaths and 12 missing persons.
