U.K. Super-Featherweight Boxer John “The Kid” Cooney Dies After Brain Injury

John “The Kid” Cooney, a 28-year-old super-featherweight boxer from the UK, has died one week after sustaining a brain injury in a championship fight. Cooney was being treated for an intracranial hemorrhage at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast when his management company announced his passing on social media.

Cooney’s management company stated that he passed away “after a week of battling for his life.” The boxer’s parents and fiancée, Emmaleen, thanked the hospital staff for their tireless efforts to save Cooney’s life. Conor McGregor also contributed £20,000 to the GoFundMe fundraiser created for Cooney’s family.

Cooney was injured during a British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) Celtic Super Featherweight title fight against Nathan Howells on February 1st. He underwent immediate surgery and spent time in the intensive care unit before passing away on February 8th. The boxing community is mourning his loss, with Howells expressing his condolences to Cooney’s family and friends.
