The US Secret Service has seized a large network of electronic devices near New York ahead of the United Nations General Assembly meeting. The agency found over 300 SIM servers, 100,000 SIM cards, and other illicit materials in multiple sites around New York City.
According to Director Sean Curran, the devices could have been used to disrupt cellphone networks, facilitate communication between criminals and foreign adversaries, or even engage in espionage. The investigation is ongoing, with forensic analysis revealing involvement from at least one foreign nation and several known bad actors.
The discovery comes as US national security officials are tracking breaches of telecommunications companies aimed at stealing private communications of senior government officials. While the devices seized do not appear to be directly linked to a specific group called Salt Typhoon, which has been linked to the Chinese government, the investigation suggests that these threats were being taken seriously by law enforcement.
The US Secret Service’s actions aim to safeguard critical infrastructure and protect public safety. The seized devices could have potentially impaired emergency communications or disrupted the U.N. General Assembly meeting, making it a serious threat to global security.
