UAW Region 9A Endorses Left-Leaning Mayoral Candidates

The United Auto Workers (UAW) Region 9A has endorsed three left-leaning Democratic mayoral primary candidates in New York City. The union, which represents thousands of workers, including public defenders, museum staff, and academics, has unanimously supported Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, City Comptroller Brad Lander, and state Senator Jessica Ramos.

The endorsement comes with an explicit instruction not to rank Eric Adams for Mayor, citing his role in cutting 3-K programs and increasing rent and cost of living. The union’s director, Brandon Mancilla, stated that the candidates have a clear “working-class agenda” and have worked closely with the union on issues such as housing, student loan forgiveness, and criminal justice reform.

The UAW surveyed its members for priorities ahead of the 2025 primary, crafting candidate questionnaires and holding interview forums. The union’s endorsement is significant, as it marks the first under a new process granting rank-and-file members greater say over endorsement decisions.

Both Lander and Mamdani expressed gratitude for the union’s early support, highlighting their shared vision for affordability, protecting workers’ rights, and preventing evictions. Ramos stated that she would not rank Adams on her ballot but stopped short of saying whether she would rank Lander or Mamdani.

The UAW’s endorsement leaves room for adjustment as the primary runs its course, with Mancilla emphasizing the importance of defeating Eric Adams while also uniting around a common platform. The union is urging voters to reject Adams and choose candidates who will make changes that work for working people.
