The UAW has secured a victory for its members after Stellantis announced plans to restart production at its Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois. The company will build the next-generation Dodge Durango in Detroit, marking a significant shift in its strategy following months of contract negotiations with UAW representatives.
Stellantis also announced investments in Toledo, Ohio, and Kokomo, Indiana, where jobs for Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator, and GMET4 EVO engine production will be created. These moves aim to address the company’s workforce needs while responding to the union’s concerns over job security and its influence on American manufacturing.
UAW President Shawn Fain praised Stellantis for its decision, calling it a testament to workers’ power in holding corporations accountable. The restart of Belvidere and Detroit productions signal a bold response to past issues, including production delays and workforce challenges.
The company’s long-standing commitment to the U.S., however, remains controversial given its recent job cuts and missteps under prior leadership. This latest announcement is seen as a turning point in Stellantis’ relationship with the UAW and its efforts to rebuild trust with American workers and stakeholders.
