Uber has launched senior accounts nationwide, aiming to provide an easier ride-hailing experience for older adults. The move is in line with the growing global trend of aging populations. By 2030, nearly 1 in 6 people globally will be 60 or older.
The new feature addresses a common challenge faced by seniors: independent mobility. Transportation experts believe that ride-sharing services can benefit older individuals, particularly those experiencing cognitive decline. Research from the CDC and University of Chicago suggests that ride-hailing apps may offer a safer alternative to driving for older adults.
Senior accounts on Uber come with simplified features such as larger text, easy-to-follow directions, and fewer buttons. Users can save frequently visited destinations and pay with a personal card or Medicare Flex card for eligible medical rides. Family members can also help book rides and receive real-time trip updates.
Uber has been piloting this concept since summer 2024, initially focusing on teen accounts. The company now expands its initiative to offer senior accounts nationwide in the US, followed by international expansion to countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, France, and South Africa.
