Uber Trials Robotaxis in London Next Spring

Uber is set to trial its robotaxi service, autonomous cars with no human safety driver, in London next spring. The ride-hailing app will work with UK AI firm Wayve, which has been testing the technology on city streets with human oversight. The UK government has changed its rules regarding driverless cars, allowing for an accelerated framework to bring small commercial services online earlier.

The trial is part of Uber’s plan to add robotaxis as a regular option via its app once legislation allows. However, it’s unclear whether the vehicles will be available for customers to use. The Department for Transport predicts that autonomous taxis and rides could create 38,000 jobs and add £42bn to the UK economy by 2035.

While some studies suggest automated vehicles are less accident-prone than human drivers, incidents involving robotaxis have occurred in countries where they operate, including road accidents and passenger malfunctions. A recent test ride with Wayve’s autonomous kit across central London showed that the car handled potential hazards with caution, making for a reassuring journey.

Uber launched its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas earlier this year, allowing customers to choose whether to take a robotaxi or not. Tesla plans to launch a rival service in the same city next month. The UK government’s decision to accelerate the introduction of autonomous services comes after numerous countries have already tested and implemented similar technology.
