Wayve and Uber are planning to launch a fully driverless robotaxi service in London in the coming years. The news comes after the UK government announced an accelerated framework for self-driving commercial pilots, allowing the companies to fast-track their trials.
The service will initially focus on the UK capital, with plans to expand to greater London and beyond. Wayve, which partnered with Uber in 2024, aims to integrate its AI technology into consumer vehicles that will operate on Uber’s platform.
Wayve needs to prove the safety of its system and operational design domain before launching the service. The company has already published a blog detailing the initial findings from its “AI-500 Roadshow,” which has demonstrated the capability of its technology to operate in various cities across Asia, Europe, and North America.
“This is a defining moment for UK autonomy,” said Alex Kendall, Wayve’s CEO and co-founder. “We’re preparing to put our AI Driver technology into real service on the streets of London, delivering on our AV2.0 vision for scalable autonomy.”
Uber has invested heavily in self-driving technology, with plans to integrate Wayve’s AI into its platform. The company aims to use Wayve’s technology as a global network, taking it everywhere.
The UK government’s accelerated framework provides a significant boost to the companies’ efforts, allowing them to bring safe and intelligent driving to everyday rides across the country sooner than expected.
