Uber’s Commitment to Safety and Transparency

Uber is often accused of prioritizing profits over passenger safety, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The company has invested billions of dollars in safety initiatives, aiming to reduce incidents such as sexual misconduct and assault.

More than half of women in the US have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. Uber recognizes this problem and is working tirelessly to strengthen its technology, policies, and procedures to improve safety. In fact, reports of serious sexual assault on Uber have dropped by 44% since 2017-2022.

Uber was one of the first companies to publish data on safety incidents publicly, demonstrating its commitment to transparency. This data includes information on the most serious categories of sexual assault reports, which are categorized and tracked closely to ensure swift action is taken against drivers or riders involved in such incidents.

The company uses Safety Risk Assessed Dispatch (S-RAD), a trip matching algorithm that prioritizes better matches between drivers and riders, particularly during late-night trips in areas known for nightlife. This technology has helped reduce sexual assault reports by 10% since its launch.

Uber’s stance on safety is unwavering, with the company advocating for survivors’ rights and providing dedicated resources to support them. The company’s internal processes are designed to be survivor-centric, relying heavily on the survivor’s statement of experience.
