Ubisoft has taken steps to protect its employees from online harassment in response to backlash over its upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The company claims it has implemented an “anti-harassment plan” to discourage developers from using social media.
According to reports, the plan was created after some users took issue with the game’s portrayal of historical figure Yasuke, a samurai of African origin. Additionally, a gaming collectibles creator came under fire for being insensitive towards Japanese culture.
An anonymous Ubisoft employee claims that the company is working closely with Canada’s Communications Security Establishment on the plan, which includes monitoring social media platforms and responding quickly to harassment. The employee stated that lawyers are prepared to file complaints in cases of proven harassment.
Ubisoft denies that its stance has changed, saying that team members’ social media channels are their own, but acknowledges the importance of online safety and well-being. The company offers guidance on navigating social media, digital safety, and support for team members’ well-being.
