No. 1 seed UCLA defeated Richmond 84-67 on Sunday night to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Lauren Betts led the Bruins with 30 points and 14 rebounds, while Janiah Barker urged the crowd to cheer her on after UCLA took a significant lead.
The game was close early, but UCLA broke away in the third quarter after Richmond scored seven unanswered points before halftime to tie the score at 36-36. The Bruins then hit four more three-pointers and outscored the Spiders 29-7, leading 65-43 going into the fourth quarter.
UCLA’s defense also stepped up, forcing Richmond into missing 12 of 15 shots over a five-minute period. Betts had 10 points in that stretch, shooting 14 of 17 from the floor. The Bruins controlled the boards 40-28 and won their largest postseason victory by 38 points against Southern.
Next, UCLA faces fifth-seeded Mississippi on Friday in Spokane.
