UCLA Gymnastics Heads Back to Nationals After Strong Performance

UCLA gymnastics has secured its spot at the NCAA championships after a strong performance at the Utah regional final. The Bruins, led by graduate student Chae Campbell’s 39.550 all-around score, finished in second place with an overall score of 197.625.

To advance to nationals, UCLA needed to secure their position on balance beam, entering the final rotation just .250 ahead of Denver. Junior Ciena Alipio and senior Emma Malabuyo scored 9.900s on uneven bars, forcing Denver to either end with a perfect 10 or miss out on nationals.

Last year’s disappointment led to the eventual dismissal and transfer of former Pac-12 gymnast of the year Selena Harris-Miranda from the program. However, this season has seen improved performances from freshmen Mika Webster-Longin and Macy McGowan, who helped launch UCLA into position to advance with a career-high 9.950 on vault.

Olympian Jordan Chiles will join Campbell, Malabuyo, and graduate student Brooklyn Moors at nationals, having previously led the team to their first Big Ten Championship two years ago. Top-seeded Louisiana State and No. 8 Michigan State have also advanced to nationals, leaving four spots still up for grabs in Sunday’s regional finals.
