UConn Wins 12th National Championship in Thrilling Fashion

The University of Connecticut Huskies have won their 12th national championship in women’s basketball, capping off a nine-year wait. The No. 2 seed team defeated South Carolina in the NCAA final with a score of 82-59. Senior guard Paige Bueckers led the team to victory and will now be remembered as a national champion.

The Huskies, who were expected to win the championship, struggled earlier in their career due to tough losses and injury setbacks. However, with the return of healthy guards Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, along with freshman forward Sarah Strong, UConn looked like its old self. The team dominated the game, with Strong scoring 24 points and Bueckers adding 17.

UConn’s victory ties for the third largest in championship game history, while also making coach Geno Auriemma the first person to win a national championship at age 70 or older. Auriemma joked about considering retirement multiple times during the season but was drawn back to practice by his team and staff.

The team’s dominance is a testament to their strong team chemistry and dedication. With Strong setting records for points, assists, and blocks in a single NCAA tournament, UConn solidified its place as one of the greatest programs in women’s basketball history.
