Facebook owner Meta has appointed Dana White, CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), as its new board member. The move comes as Mark Zuckerberg seeks to mend ties with Donald Trump ahead of his inauguration. Other new board members include John Elkann and Charlie Songhurst.
Zuckerberg praised White’s expertise in turning UFC into a global business and said he looks forward to tackling opportunities in AI, wearables, and human connection. White has previously rejected suggestions that UFC platforms promote hate speech, supporting free speech instead.
The appointment follows Sir Nick Clegg’s departure from Meta as president of global affairs. Trump’s relationship with Meta has thawed in recent months after relations became frosty following the US Capitol riot in January 2021. Zuckerberg had made derogatory comments about Trump, but recently visited Mar-a-Lago and donated $1m to his inauguration fund.
