The UK’s competition regulator has stepped up scrutiny of Apple and Google over their mobile platforms, citing concerns about inconsistent app review processes, search rankings, and commission rates. The two US tech giants hold an “effective duopoly” in the UK market, with around 90-100% of mobile devices running on their platforms.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed targeted actions to address competition concerns, including requiring Apple and Google to make their app store review processes fairer and more transparent. The regulator is also investigating up to 30% commission on in-app purchases.
Apple and Google have pushed back against the CMA’s proposals, with Google calling them “disappointing and unwarranted.” Epic Games, a company that benefits from a more open mobile ecosystem, has expressed disappointment with the CMA’s approach, saying it did not go far enough to address competition concerns.
A final decision on Apple and Google’s strategic market status will be made by October 22. If designated, the CMA will have the power to impose interventions, such as requiring companies to adhere to specific behavior to ensure fair competition.
The UK regulator’s move is seen as part of a broader effort to crack down on Big Tech’s dominance in key markets. The CMA has also proposed designating Google for its general search and search advertising market, following a similar review last month.
