UK Demands Ceasefire in Eastern DRC Amid Escalating Conflict

The UK has issued a statement urging an immediate ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) eastern region, where tensions with Rwanda have escalated into violence. The Foreign Secretary met with President Tshisekedi and Kagame on February 21-22 to express concerns over the situation.

The UK demands that both leaders engage meaningfully in African-led peace processes to find a lasting solution, honouring commitments made at a recent summit. The country will continue to support these efforts, while also working with partners to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict.

With nearly one million people displaced and hundreds of thousands in dire need of assistance, the UK emphasizes the responsibility of all parties to protect civilians. In response to the escalating conflict, the international community is expected to respond strongly. The UK has already coordinated efforts with G7 partners and used UN Security Council and Human Rights Council platforms to call for a resolution.

To pressure Rwanda into withdrawing its forces from Congolese territory, the UK will limit trade promotion activity, pause financial aid, suspend defence training assistance, review export licences, and consider new sanctions designations. The country encourages DRC President Tshisekedi to engage with M23 in an inclusive dialogue.
