The UK navy has intercepted a Russian corvette and a tanker through the English Channel, following an increase of 30% in Russian naval activity around British waters over the past two years.
A UK patrol ship, HMS Severn, recently shadowed and monitored the movements of the Russian corvette RFN Stoikiy and tanker Yelnya. The ships eventually transferred monitoring duties to an unidentified NATO ally off Brittany’s coast.
Additionally, Britain has deployed three Poseidon surveillance aircraft in Iceland as part of a NATO mission to patrol for Russian ships and submarines in the North Atlantic and Arctic.
The news comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the UK, with the Defence Secretary warning that Moscow was “reckless and dangerous” following reports of laser fire from a Russian spy ship off Scotland’s coast.
