UK Newspapers Unite Against AI Copyright Proposals

Major newspapers across the UK are joining forces to protest government proposals that could weaken copyright protections against artificial intelligence. The “Make It Fair” campaign, backed by the News Media Association and Creative Rights in AI Coalition, aims to protect British creative industries from exploitation.

The government’s plans would allow artificial intelligence companies to train their models on copyright-protected work without permission, posing a threat to creatives’ livelihoods. In response, the news media industry has united behind the “Make It Fair” campaign, which includes prominent outlets such as The Sun, Daily Mail, and Guardian.

The campaign argues that tech firms need creative content and professional journalism to power their AI models, but should compensate creators fairly for using their work. The News Media Association CEO Owen Meredith stated that the government’s proposal is “unworkable” and poses an existential threat to the UK’s £152 billion creative industry.

Other notable creatives have also spoken out against the proposals, including musicians Kate Bush and Damon Albarn. A silent album called “Is This What We Want?” was released by over 1,000 musicians in protest.
