UK PM Calls for ‘Fundamental Change’ After Girls’ Killings

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for a “fundamental change” in how the government protects citizens after three girls were killed at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. The killings, which occurred in July, also left eight other children wounded.

Starmer said that authorities had failed to spot the danger posed by 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana, who stabbed the girls to death. He announced plans for a public inquiry into the case, which will examine failings by authorities.

Rudakubana was referred to the government’s anti-extremism program, Prevent, three times as a teenager, but was missed by state agencies each time. Despite this, he went on to carry out the attack, which was described as an “act of extreme violence” intended to terrorize.

Starmer said that terrorism laws may need to be updated to deal with this new threat, and warned that terrorism suspects are increasingly displaying a range of beliefs and ideologies drawn from online hate and disinformation.

The case has sparked controversy over whether the attack should have been labeled as terrorism. Starmer defended his government’s handling of the situation, saying there was no conspiracy of silence, but rather a desire to see justice done.
