UK Proposes Coalition Against Russia’s War on Ukraine

The UK has proposed a “coalition of the willing” to help Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, with around 20 countries expressing interest in joining the effort. The plan, spearheaded by the UK and France, aims to uphold any ceasefire in the war-torn country. However, Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has warned that such a move “can’t be allowed” due to potential NATO involvement.

The proposal comes as Kyiv attempts to mend relations with Washington after the US paused its military aid to Ukraine and intelligence sharing in an effort to bring President Zelensky to the negotiating table. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has emphasized that the plan should be made “in conjunction with the United States” to ensure a strong defense.

Several European countries, including Turkey, Ireland, and Australia, have expressed interest in joining the coalition, although some have clarified their involvement would not involve deploying troops as part of a deterrent force. The UK has announced several new security deals with Ukraine, including a £1.6 billion missile deal and another worth nearly £30 million.

The EU is also grappling with the prospect of reduced security assistance from the US, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposing an €800 billion (£670 billion) defense package to protect Europe and support Ukraine’s efforts towards a lasting peace.
