UK Regulator Probes Apple, Google’s Dominant Mobile Browsers

Britain’s antitrust regulator has raised concerns about the dominance of Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome mobile browsers in the market. A report by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that these two companies dominate the browser market, with Safari accounting for 88% of browsers on Apple devices and Chrome accounting for 77% on devices running Google’s Android operating system.

The CMA has launched a wide probe into both Apple and Google’s mobile ecosystems, citing concerns about competition and innovation. The regulator believes that the current state of the market is holding back new features and services, which could benefit consumers and businesses.

Both Apple and Google have responded to the investigation, with Apple stating its focus is on user trust and security, while Google emphasized the openness of Android’s platform and its commitment to supporting developers. However, the CMA has expressed concerns about the potential impact of any remedies on privacy and security.

The investigation will consider whether either or both companies have “strategic market status” in mobile ecosystems, which could lead to interventions aimed at enhancing competition and innovation. The CMA expects its investigations to conclude later this year.
