UK Seeks Bridge Between Europe and US on Ukraine Crisis

The UK is playing a key role in mediating between the US and European nations as tensions over Ukraine’s future escalate. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the country will continue to push for Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, despite US concerns about defense spending.

Reynolds emphasized that the UK can serve as a bridge between the US and Europe as they navigate this “new era.” He acknowledged that the US has a valid point in asking European nations to contribute more to defense spending, but stressed that there is still common ground between the two blocs.

In an emergency summit in Paris on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron will convene with European leaders to discuss a joint response to US efforts to exclude them from peace talks and issues like Ukraine’s NATO membership. Reynolds expressed skepticism about the US plan presented by Trump’s vice-president, JD Vance, which focused on cultural wars rather than the real threat of Russia.

Reynolds disagreed with Vance’s stance, stating that the threat from Russia is real. He also criticized the use of an anti-abortion activist example to illustrate the importance of religious liberties, arguing that such laws are not in place in the UK and should be respected.

The Business Secretary declined to comment on speculation about a potential increase in UK defense spending, but acknowledged that the government recognizes the need for increased investment in defense. Reynolds emphasized that the US is already aware of these needs, citing the recent budget allocation as evidence of the UK’s commitment to defense spending.
