The UK is set to receive hearing aid features on Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 in a matter of weeks, with the technology already available in some countries. The update comes after Apple and the UK government relaxed regulations to allow the earbuds to be used as hearing aids.
The new software will enable users to take validated home hearing tests and receive personalized recommendations for improvement. While the feature is already live in the US, it was not previously available in the UK due to regulatory hurdles.
British Health Secretary Wes Streeting has welcomed the move, stating that it could “powerhouse” medical innovation. Apple plans to release an updated version of software, likely with iOS 18, which will allow AirPods Pro 2 to be used as a hearing aid for users with mild to moderate hearing loss.
The new feature may help those with hearing loss overcome social stigma associated with visible hearing aids, while providing improved audio quality. However, battery life is expected to be limited and may require periodic recharging.
According to Apple, the update will roll out in the coming weeks, with January or February being a possible timeline. This news has sparked excitement among some users, who see it as a significant development for hearing aid technology.
