The British government has announced plans to make the hit Netflix drama “Adolescence” available to all high schools across the UK, backed by initiatives to help teachers and parents navigate conversations raised by the show.
The initiative comes after a roundtable discussion with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and representatives from charities including Tender, NSPCC, and The Children’s Society, which advocated for the show’s inclusion in schools. Thorne said his co-creator Jack had already pushed for its inclusion in educational settings.
Starmer believes that openly discussing contemporary issues with children is crucial to supporting them in navigating challenges. He stated, “It’s an important initiative to encourage as many pupils as possible to watch the show.” The Prime Minister also acknowledged that the issue tackled by “Adolescence” cannot be simply legislated against.
Netflix has partnered with Into Film+ to stream the drama in all UK secondary schools, while Tender will produce guides and resources for teachers and parents. Netflix VP U.K. content Anne Mensah said the show’s impact on sparking conversations is significant and hopes to promote healthy relationships among young people.
The show’s producers express hope that it will lead to discussions between students, encouraging them to explore contemporary challenges with peers.
