Ukraine has captured two wounded North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday. The prisoners are being provided with necessary medical care and held in the custody of Ukraine’s Security Service.
The soldiers were reportedly captured on January 9 and initially taken to a hospital for treatment. However, after providing them with medical aid, they were transferred to Kyiv, where they are currently being held.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, the prisoners do not speak Ukrainian, English, or Russian, making it necessary to use interpreters of Korean language to communicate with them. The investigation into their involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine is ongoing, with Ukraine’s Security Service working closely with South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) to gather information.
President Zelensky has granted journalists access to the prisoners, stating that “the world needs to know the truth about what is happening.” He also expressed gratitude to Ukrainian paratroopers and soldiers who carried out the capture. The incident highlights concerns about North Korean involvement in Russia’s conflict against Ukraine.
