Ukraine Claims to Have Damaged Key Bridge Linking Crimea to Russia

Moscow denied claims by Ukraine’s SBU security service that a Ukrainian attack on the 19-kilometer bridge linking the annexed Crimean peninsula to Russia caused damage, saying “nothing was damaged” and the bridge is operational.

The bridge has been repeatedly targeted by Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale military invasion in February 2022. In October 2022, it was severely damaged in an explosion, forcing months of repairs. The bridge is seen as a strategic asset used to move Russian troops and equipment, making it a legitimate target for Ukraine.

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, and the multi-billion-dollar bridge opened in 2018 is considered a symbol of Moscow’s seizure of the peninsula. The recent attack on the bridge has sparked tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Meanwhile, The Moscow Times faces significant challenges due to government actions. The Prosecutor General’s Office has designated the newspaper as an “undesirable” organization, putting its staff at risk of prosecution. The paper continues to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia despite these efforts to silence independent journalism.
