Ukraine has launched a bold drone attack on Russia’s air force in what analysts say could be one of the most audacious military operations ever conducted by the country. The operation, code-named “Operation Spider’s Web,” involved launching hundreds of small drones from four separate locations towards nearby Russian airbases.
While Ukrainian officials have not publicly confirmed the extent of the damage caused by the attack, defence analysts believe it could be significant. The strategic bombers targeted by the drones are rare and no longer in production, making repairs difficult if not impossible.
The attack sends a critical message to Russia and its Western allies, including Ukraine’s US backers. Ukrainian officials have long argued that their country is still fighting the war, despite claims from some quarters that it has already been lost. The drone attack is seen as proof that Ukraine remains a force to be reckoned with.
“The extent of the damage is such that the Russian military-industrial complex is unlikely to be able to restore them in the near future,” says Oleksandr Kovalenko, a Ukrainian military blogger. “Today, the Russian Aerospace Forces lost not just two of their rarest aircraft, but truly two unicorns in the herd.”
The attack also highlights the growing importance of Ukraine’s military capabilities and its ability to adapt to new technologies. As Ukraine prepares to negotiate with Russia at a fresh round of ceasefire talks, officials are sending a clear message: Kyiv is still in the fight and will not be intimidated by claims of defeat.
