Ukraine has launched a major operation, targeting the strategically important Crimean Bridge with underwater explosives. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had mined the bridge’s supports with explosives equivalent to 1,100kg of TNT.
The operation, lasting “several months”, was reportedly supervised by Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk, who said Ukraine aimed to target Russian facilities on its territory. The SBU stated that no civilian casualties were involved in the initial detonation.
However, local authorities later warned that the bridge had reopened despite initial reports of damage. Social media reports suggested additional explosions, but these have not been confirmed by authorities. Russia has not commented on the attack.
The Crimean Bridge, built after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, is a symbol of Russian occupation in Ukraine. The attack marks a significant achievement for Ukraine’s military and follows recent operations against Russian targets.
