Ukraine Open to Talks, Not Surrendering Territory

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has stated that the country is ready to negotiate with Russia but will not surrender territory. This comes as media reports reveal a US proposal for a deal that would see Ukraine give up almost all occupied territory currently held by Russia. The proposed agreement includes formal recognition of Crimea as Russian and Moscow’s continued de facto control over most captured Ukrainian territory.

Svyrydenko warned that any agreement giving Russia the stronger foundations it needs to regroup and return with greater violence will not be accepted. She emphasized that Ukraine’s people will not accept a “frozen conflict disguised as peace.” In contrast, Ukraine has pushed for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with negotiations proceeding after a ceasefire is established.

If Moscow opts for a limited pause instead of a full ceasefire, Kyiv would respond in kind, according to Svyrydenko. The US proposal highlights the differing views between Ukraine and Russia on what constitutes a viable peace agreement.
