Ukraine-Russia Conflict Escalates with Missile Strike and Ceasefire Talks

Ukraine has accused Russia of making “hollow statements” about peace as a missile strike on the city of Sumy left 88 people wounded, including 17 children. The attack occurred during ceasefire talks in Saudi Arabia, where Russian officials are discussing a narrow ceasefire proposal with US and Ukrainian delegations.

The White House says achieving security in the Black Sea is key to allowing the free flow of shipping, which will benefit both Ukraine and Russia. However, China has ruled out providing peacekeeping forces to enforce any peace deal.

Meanwhile, fears have emerged that Russian President Vladimir Putin may abuse human rights laws against British peacekeepers who are part of a planned force sent to Ukraine. The UK government is considering creating an exemption from European Convention on Human Rights for the soldiers.

As talks continue in Saudi Arabia, US officials are discussing territory and power plant ownership with Ukrainian counterparts. Territorial lines and potential US control over a key nuclear power plant have been part of the discussions.

A powerful cyberattack hit Ukraine’s state railway service, causing long queues at stations, which Kyiv officials believe was an attempt to “destabilize” the situation. The White House says talks between the US and Ukraine are going well, with an announcement expected soon.
