Ukraine has imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies in response to what it claims is China’s involvement in supplying weapons to Russia. The move comes amid rising tensions between Kyiv and Beijing, which have accused each other of supporting the Russian military effort.
Three Chinese firms – Beijing Aviation And Aerospace Xianghui Technology Co. Ltd, Rui Jin Machinery Co. Ltd, and Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber Xining Co. Ltd – have been targeted by Ukraine’s sanctions. The companies will face restrictions on doing business in Ukraine and will see their assets frozen in the country.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly accused China of supplying weapons to Russia, a claim that Beijing has consistently denied. However, Zelenskyy claims to have received intelligence suggesting Chinese involvement in sending arms, including gunpowder and artillery, to Russian forces.
The sanctions come after Ukraine released videos of two captured Chinese men who were allegedly fighting with Russian forces. Ukraine estimates at least 155 Chinese citizens are involved on Russia’s side.
China has repeatedly stated its position on the Ukraine issue, saying it is working to promote a ceasefire and push for peace talks. However, analysts suggest that Ukraine’s stance towards China has been shifting in recent months. In May last year, Zelenskyy accused China of helping Russia block international efforts to participate in a peace conference in Switzerland.
