Russia’s military has launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, killing at least 35 people and injuring over 100. The Ukrainian Air Force claims that Russian missiles targeted the city, while Russia’s Defence Ministry says its forces hit a meeting of Ukrainian military officers.
Ukraine accuses Russia of committing a war crime, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy calling for a tough international response to the attack. The US and European leaders have condemned the strike, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying it highlights the need for a ceasefire.
The Russian Defence Ministry denies any wrongdoing, claiming that Ukraine is using civilians as human shields by placing military facilities in densely populated areas. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also denied Western participation in the meeting, but refused to provide evidence.
The attack on Sumy comes as tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain high, with over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians killed in the war so far. The international community is calling for a lasting peace that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
