Ukraine Strikes 10 Russian Energy Facilities with Drone and Missile Attacks

Ukraine has conducted multiple drone and missile strikes against critical infrastructure sites in Russia, including oil depots, refineries, and manufacturing plants. The attacks aim to disrupt Moscow’s ability to fund the war effort and damage its key industries.

According to Newsweek’s map, Ukraine targeted 10 Russian energy facilities this week, including the Taneco oil refinery in Tatarstan region, which is crucial for funding Russia’s war effort. The aerial strike on January 11 caused a fire at the site, which can process over 16 million tons of oil per year.

The strikes have also hit other critical infrastructure sites, such as the Russkaya compressor station, which supplies gas through the Turkish Stream pipeline to European countries. Ukraine’s attack in January 13 aimed to “cut off gas supplies” to Europe, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Ukraine’s efforts are part of its broader strategy to disrupt Russia’s economy and limit its ability to earn oil export revenue. The strikes have caused significant damage to facilities, with estimated reconstruction costs ranging from tens of millions of dollars.

The attacks come as Russia’s economy is already struggling due to Western sanctions. Moscow’s reliance on oil exports means that any disruption can have a significant impact on the country’s economy.

While the full extent of Ukraine’s capabilities remains unclear, experts say that the country’s developed capability to strike deep inside Russia with drones and missiles brings the war home to Russia and limits its ability to continue fighting.
