Ukraine’s military carried out an attack on Russia’s Engels-2 airbase deep inside the country this week. Satellite images reveal extensive damage at the base, which is home to Tu-95 and Tu-160 bomber aircraft. This marks one of Ukraine’s latest deep-strike operations aimed at degrading Russia’s war machine.
The attack occurred in the Saratov region, hundreds of miles from the front lines. Ukrainian forces reportedly observed fires, explosions, and a secondary detonation of ammunition near the base. The Russian airbase has been targeted by Ukraine multiple times during the conflict, with this being the third attack this year.
Satellite images obtained by Business Insider show damage to an ammunition and weapons storage area, with buildings and bunkers destroyed. Russia has taken measures to protect its aircraft at Engels, including placing tires on bombers to shield them from Ukrainian missiles and drones.
Ukraine’s campaign aims to threaten and degrade Russia’s military infrastructure, which is hundreds of miles away from the front lines. The attack comes amid a larger barrage of drone strikes by Russia, with over 200 drones and missiles launched against Ukraine overnight.
The US has served as an intermediary in discussions between Russia and Ukraine on a limited cease-fire. However, Moscow has continued its missile barrages on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure. Despite this, both countries have agreed to reduce attacks on energy facilities.
