A heated meeting between Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US officials ended with Zelenskyy being shown the door instead of signing a minerals deal. However, many community members believe that an end to the three-year war is still possible.
Daniel Griffin, a Luzerne County man who volunteered in Ukraine, remains hopeful for peace. He believes the US will continue to show support for Ukraine and mend ties with the country. Griffin attributes the miscommunication during the meeting to language barriers and differing deals between past presidents.
Pastor William Lukesh of Stella Presbyterian Church also expressed faith in Ukraine’s chances for a peaceful resolution. Despite the US not being included in preliminary peace talks with Russia, Pastor Lukesh believes that Ukraine can still see the US as their best friend and work towards a solution.
Both men agree that a peaceful end to the war is necessary sooner rather than later. With over 1,100 days into the conflict, many are hoping for a resolution that will bring an end to the fighting.
