Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a notable change in his attire at Pope Francis’ funeral, opting for an all-black look that departed from his usual military-style ensembles. The 47-year-old leader’s decision to wear a tailored black field jacket with patch pockets was part of his “capsule collection” designed by Ukrainian menswear designer Viktor Anisimov.
The collection, which featured approximately two dozen pieces made from natural certified fabrics, was created exclusively for Zelensky and is not currently available to consumers. Anisimov’s collaboration with the president was a first for the designer, who said he aimed to preserve “the idea of military uniform while reimagining it through a modern design perspective.”
The Ukrainian leader’s attire choice sparked debate on social media during his February visit to the Oval Office, where he was criticized by President Trump and Vice President JD Vance for not wearing a suit. Zelensky responded that he would wear formal attire after the war ends.
As Ukraine continues to face significant economic challenges, including $524 billion in needed reconstruction funds over the next decade, Anisimov’s design showcases the country’s resilience and modernity. The designer said his team creates jobs for Ukrainians while supporting patriotic initiatives.
The conflict has resulted in 43,610 civilian casualties, with Zelensky expressing a deep sense of responsibility for those affected. His wife, Olena Zelenska, also wore an all-black ensemble to the funeral, symbolizing solidarity with the soldiers fighting against Russia.
