United Launch Alliance (ULA) is planning to upgrade its Vulcan Centaur rocket into a “space interceptor” to defend satellites from potential threats in space. The company’s CEO, Tory Bruno, envisions the upgraded Centaur as a key player in providing defense against adversaries targeting U.S. Space Force assets.
Currently, satellites rely on slow and limited thrusters to maneuver and reach their targets, taking days or weeks to do so. However, Bruno proposes moving fast with powerful thrusters and ample energy supply to stop potential threats within hours. This would enable the creation of a squadron of “lethal interceptors” capable of disabling hostile satellites without creating large debris fields.
Bruno emphasizes the importance of space defense, stating that it’s crucial for maintaining national security. He compares this need to traditional naval defenses, highlighting the need for destroyers in orbit – or “Greyhounds of Space.”
The U.S. Space Force is also prioritizing its role as a cornerstone of defense, acknowledging the challenges posed by congested and contested space environments. The upcoming launch of Vulcan Centaur on its first national security mission with the Space Force marks an important step towards developing this capability.
If successful, ULA’s upgraded Centaur could grant the company a significant advantage in the competitive spaceflight industry, making it a valuable asset for both defense and commercial clients.
