Ultra-processed foods have been found to increase the risk of several types of cancer, including colorectal, breast, and pancreatic cancers. According to Dr Pritam Kataria, a consultant in medical oncology, these foods contain additives that can harm health. Ultra-processed foods are made from substances extracted from foods such as fats, starches, added sugars, and hydrogenated fats.

Examples of ultra-processed foods include frozen meals, soft drinks, hot dogs, fast food, packaged cookies, cakes, and salty snacks. Consuming these foods regularly can lead to a 12% increase in cancer risk and a 10% rise in cardiovascular disease risk.

Ultra-processed foods also contribute to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. They contain high levels of trans fats that can harm heart health. Reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods is essential for maintaining good health.

To cut down on ultra-processed foods, it’s crucial to differentiate between processed and ultra-processed food options. While some processed foods can be beneficial, such as fermented foods or canned goods, others are high in sugar and low in nutrients. Limiting consumption of these high-risk foods is key to reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
