Ultra-processed foods are packaged items with multiple ingredients that contain high levels of sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats. These foods can have a significant impact on mental health, causing mood swings, anxiety, and depression.
Dr. Ruth Miranda, a registered dietitian, warns that consuming ultra-processed foods can lead to dependency on sugary drinks like soda or coffee. “Your body’s going to crave more Coke, more sugar,” she says. “So what happens now is that you feel this dependency to this sugar item.”
Research shows that excessive sugar intake can contribute to depression in the long run. Other ingredients found in ultra-processed foods, such as high-fructose corn syrup and refined sugar, also affect mental health.
The impact on children is particularly concerning. A local daycare, 5 Star Kids Daycare, implemented a healthier food plan and noticed significant improvements in their students’ behavior. Children who previously consumed a lot of ultra-processed foods now experience better sleep, reduced hyperactivity, and improved focus.
By switching to whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains, parents can reduce the risk of mental health issues in themselves and their children. Dr. Miranda suggests meal prepping healthy meals at night for the next day to help create good habits from a young age.
