University of Miami basketball coach Jim Larranaga has announced his decision to retire, citing exhaustion and the difficulties in adapting to the changing landscape of college sports. The 75-year-old coach led the Hurricanes to their first Final Four appearance last season, but the team’s performance this year has been disappointing.
Larranaga expressed frustration with the lack of rules and transparency in college athletics, particularly the use of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. He felt that this shift has created an environment where coaches like him can no longer maintain the passion, integrity, and family atmosphere that he values.
The Hurricanes have struggled to find their footing this season, with a record of 4-8 and losses in 18 of their last 22 games. Larranaga’s wife was seen crying during the news conference, and his longtime associate head coach Bill Courtney will take over as interim coach until the end of the season.
Larranaga, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in Miami basketball history, compiled a 274-174 record during his 14-year tenure. He led the Hurricanes to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including four trips to the Sweet 16, and was awarded numerous Coach of the Year honors throughout his career.
The retirement marks the latest chapter in Larranaga’s legacy, which includes fellow Hall of Famers Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Jay Wright, Jim Boeheim, and Tony Bennett. Despite his decision to step down, Larranaga expressed a desire to remain involved with the university and potentially teach a class.
“I love the game, I love coaching it, I love practice every day,” Larranaga said. “I’m exhausted.”
