UN Chief Urges End to Gaza Blockade Amid ‘Death Loop’

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to the blockade on Gaza, saying civilians are trapped in a “death loop” due to Israel’s control over aid deliveries and a ban on entry of vital supplies. The blockage has lasted since March 2, with no food, fuel, or medicine reaching the enclave of 2.3 million people.

Guterres rejected a new Israeli proposal to control aid delivery, saying it would further limit access to basic necessities. He warned that civilians are being subjected to “unparalleled humanitarian suffering” and called for a permanent ceasefire, full humanitarian access in Gaza, and the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza.

The UN chief’s comments came after Israel resumed its bombardment of Gaza last month and sent troops back into the enclave. French President Emmanuel Macron has also visited Egypt to call on Israel to lift the blockade, citing “unequivocal obligations” under international law for the occupying power to facilitate relief programs and ensure basic standards in Gaza.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with hospitals struggling to treat patients after an Israeli assault began in October 2023. The French president’s visit aimed to pressure Israel into reopening crossing points for humanitarian aid delivery.
