UN Delegation Condemns Violence, Calls for Protection of Civilians in Gaza

A delegation of 80 UN member countries has signed a declaration condemning violence against civilians in armed conflict, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which faces its worst humanitarian crisis, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). France’s UN mission confirmed this statement.

The declaration calls for parties to allow and facilitate safe, rapid, and unhindered humanitarian access to all civilians in need. It also emphasizes that accountability for violations is essential, with alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights abuses requiring credible investigations and perpetrators being held accountable.

Humanitarian organizations face significant challenges in reaching Gaza, where the Israeli military’s control has increased by over 50% since renewing its operations. The UN reported that it was unable to unload and distribute any humanitarian aid due to insecurity and the risk of looting.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with allegations of ethnic cleansing and genocide being made by international bodies such as the Council of Europe. However, Israel maintains that renewed operations are necessary to prevent Hamas from looting humanitarian aid.

A recent shipment of 100 trucks carrying humanitarian aid has entered Gaza after an 11-week blockade was lifted, but many are concerned that more aid is needed, and faster.
